JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs complex architectural assistance work and advanced preservation work. Work involves performing architectural review work in an office and field setting. Works under moderate supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Provides technical assistance on preservation, rehabilitation, and restoration of historic properties, and performs on-site consultation with the public, architectural consultants, and government officials regarding appropriate preservation techniques.
- Reviews construction projects in the areas of the federal investment tax credit program, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Antiquities Code of Texas, Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks, and State Archeological Landmarks.
- Advises regarding compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Texas Accessibility Standards as implemented in historic buildings.
- Participates in conferences and workshops, and speaks to communities and professional groups about the Texas Historical Commission’s programs to encourage participation.
- Develops agreement documents and preservation covenants and easements.
- Performs related work as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Education:
Project Design Assistant: Candidates should have a BA or Masters degree from an accredited school of architecture with an emphasis on historic preservation or architectural history, or the applicant should have two years of historic preservation experience. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
Architect I: Candidates should have a BA or graduate degree from an accredited school of architecture and be registered as an architect by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners, plus one of the following: (1) at least one year of graduate study in architectural preservation, American architectural history, preservation planning, or closely related fields; or (2) at least one year of full-time professional experience on historic preservation projects.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Preferred that the successful applicant have at least two years of previous historic preservation work; experience working with federal project review and compliance; experience in reviewing or developing architectural treatment proposals for historic properties; familiarity with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties; good public speaking and writing skills; and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010.

Architect I applicants must be registered as an Architect by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.
