Before and After Restoration

Unoccupied since 1977, this courthouse is renown as Corpus Christi's most endangered historic property. Steps toward a positive change began in 2000 with an assessment of building needs and development of a Preservation Master Plan. Awarded $2.2 million between 2001 and 2004 to jumpstart the process, the courthouse ownership was transferred back to the county. The restorative work included removal of inappropriate additions, replacement of the existing roof, stabilization of the exterior masonry and protection of the exterior door and window openings. The entire façade of the south wing was restored to its original condition as a demonstration project. This first phase was completed in May 2006.
