DENISON, Texas —
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recently named John Akers to the position of site manager at Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site. The site is one of 20 around the state operated by the THC.
Eisenhower Birthplace features the modest, two-story frame house in the railroad town of Denison, where Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower was born in 1890. The home contains period antiques, and a nearby visitors center features items relating to Eisenhower and his significant role in American and world history.
Akers will serve as the on-site manager, and will work to ensure regional travelers have a meaningful experience when they visit. He will work with partners, residents, and businesses in the community, as well as oversee all operations.
“I look forward to assuming the position of site manager at this fascinating site that honors such a compelling figure in world history,” said Akers. “My years of experience as a public historian, educator, and manager will be especially helpful in bringing these real stories to life. I look forward to working with the folks of this community and visitors from Texas and the nation.”
Akers most recently held the position of Historic Education and Outreach Coordinator at Sahuaro Ranch Park Historic Area in Glendale, Ariz. He also recently served as Secretary of the Museum Association of Arizona.
“We are very pleased to welcome John to the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site,” said THC Historic Sites Division Director Donna Williams. “He brings a broad range of experience to the position, and the facility and staff will benefit from his knowledge in oversight of historic properties.”
Eisenhower Birthplace is in Denison, approximately 75 miles north of Dallas. The site includes the namesake home, visitors center, an iconic statue of Eisenhower, and scenic grounds containing gardens and pavilion picnic area.
