AUSTIN, Texas —
With the approach of Memorial Day on May 27, take time this month to honor the heroic servicemen and women who gave their lives defending our nation. A special Memorial Day Program will take place at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg on May 27 at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. Prior to that, the museum will offer its popular Pacific Combat Living History Reenactment on May 25–26, using objects from the museum’s education collections to bring World War II to life for visitors. There are three programs each day at 10:30 a.m.; 1p.m.; and 3:30 p.m. The National Museum of the Pacific War is one of 20 state historic sites overseen by the Texas Historical Commission (THC).
In addition to specific events, the THC encourages travelers to utilize the thematic travel guides dedicated to Texas’ involvement in World War II and the Civil War, and to learn more about the significance of Palmito Ranch Battlefield near Brownsville, where the last major battle of the Civil War was fought. These brochures direct heritage travelers to significant historic sites, including Galveston, the site of the 1863 Battle of Galveston that ended Union occupation of the port.
