How You Can Help Preserve the Past

  • Opportunities abound to assist at one of the THC’s State Historic Sites throughout Texas. You can participate in a special event or service project as an individual or as a group or join the site Friends group. Site host volunteer opportunities are available at some sites.

  • Founded in 1984, the Texas Archeological Stewardship Network (TASN) is a group of highly trained and motivated avocational archeologists who work on a volunteer basis. Each year stewards devote thousands of hours to assisting landowners, recording archeological sites, and giving public talks. The TASN is one of the most innovative programs of its kind in the nation and has served as the model for similar programs in other states.

  • The letters RIP are commonly found carved on gravestones, bidding the deceased an earthly wish for eternal rest in peace. RIP is also one of the Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) cemetery preservation initiatives: Record, Investigate, Protect. The RIP Guardian program provides technical assistance and education to local volunteers and empowers them with proper cemetery restoration and preservation techniques they can share with others.

Leave a Legacy

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) offers several opportunities to assist Texans interested in leaving a legacy by donating property or easements. A donor’s generosity will help preserve and protect Texas’ significant resources for future generations and, in the process, provide potentially significant tax benefits. With the help of the THC, this can be accomplished in three ways: conservation easements, land banking and the Revolving Properties Fund.
