In 1947, G. “Jim” Hasslocher opened a bicycle rental business at the front gate of Brackenridge Park. When summer arrived he started selling sliced, ice-cold watermelon next to his bike stand. It was here that he met his wife and lifetime business partner, Veva Ball.
Soon Jim started selling charcoal-broiled hamburgers at a stand which evolved into the first Frontier Drive-In. The popular drive-in was a favorite meeting place and became famous for its burgers, onion rings, milkshakes and carhops. Jim’s aim was to provide his customers with the highest quality food at the lowest possible price. It was an original idea with a loyal following.
Today Frontier Enterprises is a highly successful, privately owned restaurant company with a reputation for quality food and service, operating Jim’s Restaurants in San Antonio and Austin, and The Magic Time Machine restaurants in San Antonio and Dallas — all offering the same great value and outstanding quality that was served at that first watermelon stand over 65 years ago.
The Hasslocher family is supportive of military personnel, remaining actively involved with several charities for returning heroes and their families. Frontier is committed to local law enforcement officers and first responders as well. Frontier Enterprises is an active community neighbor and long-time employer. The company works to support the success of the restaurant industry through development of tomorrow’s workforce involved in programs such as the Texas Restaurant Association, the Luke Postollos Scholarship Foundation and the San Antonio Restaurant Association Culinary Scholarship program. The additionally provide tuition reimbursement to any of their over 1,000 employees that wish to attend college while working for Frontier. The firm enjoys record breaking employee tenures and has a reputation as a wonderful place to work.
